July 2020 features Bose Fayodeka
Bose is a food blogger who loves to share her experimentation with food, founder of Bose’s Kitchen – a food and catering service she runs with her mum and a Content Optimisation assistant at Tesco.
I’ve always been a huge fan of speaking to multi-hyphenated folks and so having the chance to speak to Bose was such a fantastic opportunity! She’s an inspiration for folks that want to see what is possible with skills that are built up over time and applying them to different areas. 💪🏼 Bose’s journey
Bose studied Business and Marketing at Brunel University. Unsure where she wanted to go, she ended up focusing more on the marketing aspect of her degree. Interestingly, she completed her dissertation on influencer marketing! As her day job, she works as a Content Optimisation Assistant at Tesco.
Bose first learnt how to cook from watching her mum, who had previously been a chef at hospitals and banks. “She’s the queen of the kitchen!” 🌟 It wasn’t until university where she had the chance to really experiment with cooking for herself and others.
Unlike a lot of students who first live off pot noodles their first year, Bose was keen to really experiment with her cooking by adding different flavours and trying new recipes.
“I used to host dinner parties, and cooked for loads of people!” 👩🏻🍳
In addition to her love for cooking, Bose began taking photos of the meals that she had prepared. Back then, she didn’t know that blogging, specifically food blogging was even a thing that people did! As she loved taking pictures of her food, she decided to share them on her platform. 2017 was the year Bose decided to take being a foodie seriously.
Over time, she became more skilled at cooking and now has founded Bose’s Kitchen and is a prominent food blogger in the space.
“At the end of the day, it’s all practice. If it comes out wrong, it comes out wrong! That’s OK. You need to experiment to find what works.”
📝 Becoming a Food Blogger
When I asked Bose the inspiration to become a food blogger, she told me that she was inspired by people that she followed who did a lot of cooking (including professionals at cooking shows!) and other foodies online.
Interestingly, Bose actually first began as a fashion blogger. Starting a food blog came out of nowhere for her! But it was definitely encouraged by the photos that she had taken of her food and wanting to share her thoughts of the food she made, the food she had (at restaurants) in a “review” sort of style with people. Her style has been to create simple recipes that are easy to follow.
Her content started to gain attraction as folks around the world engaged with her food content.
💛 Bose’s Kitchen
Passionate about her creative, delicious recipes, Bose founded her food and catering business, Bose’s Kitchen with her mum. During the COVID-19 crisis, Bose and her mum cooked 25 meals to donate food to vulnerable people around London.
After the delivery, they found quite a few folks on a Facebook page asking if they sell their food because it was amazing! Inspired, Bose set up all the marketing and designed the menus for Bose’s Kitchen in one night. 👏 With her mum as Head Chef, Bose led on the marketing aspects of the business – using her skills from work and university to create something really quite impactful in her local community.
🧀 A favourite recipe for herself
“Macaroni and cheese.”
Bose shared that she was quite well-known for her famous macaroni and cheese. During Christmas events, people would take trays of her food back home with them! Whenever they change the menu at Bose’s Kitchen and leave out macaroni and cheese, people ask for it again and again. I’m not surprised…have you SEEN how amazing it looks?
Another one of Bose’s favourites is a stir fry because of all the vegetables and chicken/beef that you can add to it!
🍗 A favourite recipe for others
Recently, Bose’s Kitchen has had a fish menu that went up but the one thing people always ask for is her famous jerk chicken. I mean… the image really speaks for itself!
✨ Advice for those interested in pursuing a similar journey
Bose’s main advice those who are interested in pursuing a similar journey to hers is “just to start. Don’t wait for the perfect moment – it’s never going to be a perfect time. You have to just start with what you have!”
She shares that she had just used her phone when she first started blogging, she didn’t have anything fancy to start… She just started! You never know what you will get out of just putting your passion out there – Bose had actually got her first food collab even though she had thought that she didn’t have a lot of followers.
There’s a lot of pressure for everything that you create to be perfect especially in the age where young content creators seem to have everything at their disposal to create perfect looking content. But it shows how much someone else can see your potential if you just start – no matter what your beginning looks like!
🌙 2020 Vision
I like to ask this question because right now it always seems like doom and gloom with the state of the world, so a bit of injected positivity is what we need! Bose plans to continue to build up and scale her business, Bose’s Kitchen by focusing on further improving her content and platforms. She hopes to be able to deliver around the London area and hopefully around the UK!
